Knowledge Base entry

What are the main "personas" on Reddit (lurker, commenter, poster, moderator, advertiser)?

A practical answer page built from the knowledge base source.

Reddit's user population segments naturally into several distinct participation modes, each with its own relationship to the platform. Lurkers are the vast majority of Reddit's audience — users who read posts and comments but rarely or never vote, comment, or post themselves. Estimates have historically suggested that lurkers account for upwards of 80% to 90% of Reddit's actual readership, consuming enormous amounts of content without generating any. Many lurkers maintain accounts but use them almost exclusively for reading; others visit Reddit entirely without logging in. Commenters are the next tier: users who actively contribute to discussions by replying to posts and to other comments, expressing opinions, sharing knowledge, asking follow-up questions, and building the conversational texture that makes threads interesting. Commenters are often the most socially engaged participants in a community's day-to-day life. Posters are users who take the additional step of creating original submissions — sharing links, writing text posts, uploading images, or raising questions for the community to discuss. Posting requires more effort and more courage (in the sense of subjecting oneself to collective evaluation) than commenting, and the proportion of users who post regularly is much smaller than those who only comment. Moderators are volunteer community administrators who shape the rules, culture, and enforcement practices of specific subreddits. Moderating is unpaid labor, and moderators wield significant power within their communities including the ability to remove posts and comments, ban users, and set community-wide rules. Reddit's entire community governance structure depends on moderators volunteering their time. Advertisers are entities — companies, political campaigns, nonprofits — that pay Reddit to place promoted posts and display advertisements in users' feeds, representing the commercial layer that financially sustains the platform.
