## Module 15 — Edge cases, troubleshooting, and meta-level understanding ### Why might you suddenly be unable to comment or post in communities that previously worked? The most common reason for a sudden loss of posting or commenting ability in a community is a change to that community's settings by its moderators. Subreddits frequently adjust their karma thresholds, account-age requirements, or posting restrictions in response to spam waves, brigading events, or other community disruptions. A community that was previously open may have switched to an approved-submitters-only model, meaning ordinary users must request explicit permission before contributing. Even if none of the community's rules changed, your account's karma in a particular category — post karma versus comment karma — may not meet a newly raised bar. Beyond community-specific changes, Reddit's platform-wide spam detection systems can also quietly limit your activity without any formal notification. These automated systems flag accounts that exhibit patterns associated with spam or manipulation, such as posting at unusually high frequency, receiving a sudden cluster of reports, or interacting primarily with one community. When these signals cross a threshold, the system may suppress your submissions or comments so they appear to post successfully on your end but never actually appear to others — a phenomenon sometimes called being caught in a subreddit's spam filter rather than a full shadowban. Account age and karma also interact with subreddit rules dynamically. Reddit moderators can configure AutoModerator to silently remove posts from accounts below a certain threshold, and these thresholds can be changed at any time without announcement. If the community recently experienced a coordinated inauthentic activity event or a controversial news spike, moderators may have tightened rules as a temporary measure. Similarly, Reddit admins occasionally apply quarantine or restricted status to entire communities, which limits who can post even if individual accounts appear healthy. Checking the community's wiki, pinned posts, or sidebar rules will often reveal recent announcements explaining a sudden restriction.
