Module 8 — Rules, Reddiquette, and safety

### What are Reddit's official Content Policy rules? Reddit's official content policy is organized into eight platform-wide rules that apply to every user and every community regardless of subreddit-specific guidelines. These rules represent the absolute floor of acceptable behavior and are enforced by Reddit's administrators rather than by individual moderators. Understanding them is foundational to using the platform without risk of account action. Rule 1 states that users must "remember the human," establishing that Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups. It explicitly prohibits harassment, bullying, and threats of violence, and states that communities and users who incite violence or promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned. Rule 2 requires authentic participation in communities and prohibits spam, disruptive behavior, and content manipulation that interferes with Reddit communities. This covers coordinated inauthentic behavior and vote manipulation. Rule 3 addresses privacy: users must respect the privacy of others. Sharing someone's personal or confidential information to instigate harassment is prohibited. Posting or threatening to post non-consensual intimate imagery — including AI-generated depictions — is also covered under this rule. Rule 4 is absolute: no sexual, abusive, or suggestive content involving minors under any circumstances, including fantasy or fictional content. Any predatory behavior involving a minor is also prohibited. Rule 5 requires authenticity in identity. Users may remain pseudonymous, but intentionally impersonating a real individual or entity in a deceptive manner is not permitted. Rule 6 requires proper content labeling, particularly for graphic, sexually explicit, or offensive material. Content communities must be correctly classified (NSFW, quarantine) so users can anticipate what they are about to see. Rule 7 keeps the platform legal: no posting of illegal content, and no facilitating illegal or prohibited transactions of any kind. Rule 8 prohibits actions that break or interfere with the site's normal functioning, including technical attacks and exploitation of platform vulnerabilities.
