Module 5 — Posting: creating threads that work

A practical answer page built from the knowledge base source.

### What types of posts can you create (text, link, image, video, poll, gallery)? Reddit supports several distinct post types, each suited to a different kind of content and goal. The most fundamental is the text post, sometimes called a self post, which opens a full composition window where you can write paragraphs, add formatting, and embed images inline. Text posts are the backbone of discussion-focused communities because they keep readers on the page and invite written responses. Link posts allow you to submit an external URL — a news article, a video, a product page, or any web address — so that clicking the post title takes readers directly to that destination. These are common in news aggregation communities like r/worldnews or r/technology. Image posts let you attach a single photo or graphic, which displays as a preview in the feed and opens inline when clicked. Video posts work similarly but support direct uploads or links to hosted video files; Reddit also embeds YouTube and other video services automatically when you paste a qualifying URL. Gallery posts, introduced to make image-heavy sharing easier, let you attach up to twenty images or GIFs in a single post presented as a swipeable carousel. They are popular in communities focused on photography, crafts, home renovation, or any project that benefits from a sequence of images. Poll posts offer a multiple-choice question with up to six answer options; readers vote anonymously, and the results are displayed directly in the feed after casting a vote. Polls are useful for quick, lightweight surveys within a community. Finally, some communities also support the Q&A post type, which structures the thread around a formal question-and-answer format. The available post types for any given community depend on what its moderators have enabled, so a subreddit focused purely on photography may disable text posts entirely, while a legal advice community may restrict submissions to text only. Always check which post types are available in the community's sidebar or by opening the Create Post dialog before drafting your submission.
