Evaluating moderator candidates requires looking at both observable behavior and less tangible qualities like judgment and culture fit. The most active commenter in your subreddit is not automatically the best moderator candidate, and the quietest member might have the steadiest temperament for enforcement work. The most reliable signal is posting and commenting history within your own community. A candidate who has been a regular contributor for several months has demonstrated sustained interest in the topic, familiarity with the community's norms, and a track record of interaction that you can evaluate directly. Look for how they respond to disagreement — do they engage constructively or become confrontational? Do they flag rule violations in comments rather than escalating them? Do they help new members navigate the community? These behaviors are more predictive of moderation quality than any formal application answer. Account age and overall Reddit history provide broader context. Candidates with very new accounts lack established reputations, and their moderation behavior is harder to predict. Looking at their activity in other subreddits reveals how they behave when the community being moderated is not their own — which is often more revealing than their behavior in a community where they want to make a good impression. A formal application process — even a short one — adds useful signal. Asking candidates to describe a moderation scenario they have encountered elsewhere on Reddit and how they handled it, to explain a rule they would add to or change in your community, and to describe how they would handle a conflict with a fellow moderator surfaces both practical judgment and interpersonal approach. Candidates who answer the conflict question by defaulting to "I would always defer to the other moderator" or "I would enforce my view regardless" are both concerning; good candidates describe a process of communication and escalation. Start new moderators with limited permissions — post removal only, no banning — and observe how they exercise that limited authority for several weeks before expanding their access. A probationary period protects the community from the consequences of a poor choice while giving the new moderator time to learn the team's approach.
