A community's purpose and values are easy to articulate when there are ten members who all know each other's posting style. At a thousand members, institutional memory begins to fracture; at ten thousand, new members may have no idea why specific rules exist or what the community originally stood for. Documentation is the mechanism for preserving continuity across scale. The subreddit wiki is the natural home for this documentation. Most communities underuse the wiki, treating it as a dumping ground for outdated FAQs, but it is the right place for a detailed statement of the community's purpose, the history of significant rule changes, an explanation of the values that guide moderation decisions, and a collection of exemplary posts that illustrate what the community is at its best. A well-maintained wiki creates a reference point that moderators, long-standing members, and newcomers can all consult. The community's founding narrative is worth articulating in writing while it is still fresh. Who created this space and why? What problem did it solve that existing communities did not? What kind of discussion does it aspire to host? Writing this narrative in a dedicated wiki page or in the subreddit's sidebar preserves the original vision against the inevitable drift that comes from growth and turnover in the moderator team. Moderation logs and notes serve an internal documentation function. When you ban a user, change a rule, or make a significant moderation decision, noting the reason in the mod log creates an institutional record that future moderators can learn from. Communities that lack this internal documentation are prone to repeating past mistakes because no one remembers why a particular rule was written or why a particular enforcement approach was adopted. Revisiting documentation annually is a healthy practice. As the community's focus shifts, as Reddit's policies change, and as the membership evolves, outdated documentation creates confusion. An annual review of the wiki, the rules, and the orientation post ensures that the written artifacts of the community still accurately reflect its lived reality.
