How do you anonymize screenshots or posts that include sensitive info?

A practical answer page built from the knowledge base source.

When sharing screenshots or posts that contain personal information — either yours or someone else's — the standard practice is to obscure identifying details before publishing. This applies whether you are sharing evidence of a rule violation, seeking advice about an interpersonal conflict, or discussing a workplace or family situation where real names or other identifiers appear. For screenshots containing text, the most reliable approach is to use image editing software to apply a solid-color block over sensitive text rather than a blur. Blurred text can sometimes be partially recovered with image enhancement software, particularly if the original text was high-contrast. Solid-color fills — ideally matching or close to the background color of the screenshot — are not reversible. Most basic image editors including those built into operating systems include a paint or fill tool capable of this. On mobile, apps like Sketchbook, Snapseed, or even built-in markup tools in iOS and Android can apply opaque blocks over selected areas. Information to obscure includes full names, usernames from other platforms (since they can be searched directly), email addresses, phone numbers, workplace names, physical addresses, profile photos, and anything else specific enough to identify an individual. In posts about interpersonal conflicts, changing distinguishing details of the situation — replacing a specific occupation with a vaguer description, omitting an unusual hobby, adjusting the number of children or relationships mentioned — adds an additional layer of protection that image editing cannot provide. When sharing screenshots of Reddit content itself, be aware that the original poster's username may still be searchable even after you redact it in an image, particularly if the post was publicly visible and has been indexed. In situations where you want to describe a post without exposing its source, paraphrasing the content in text rather than screenshotting it is the most complete protection for all parties.
