How do you add images or links to a text post?

A practical answer page built from the knowledge base source.

Adding images to a text post is handled differently depending on which interface you use, and the distinction matters because it affects how the post appears in the feed. On the mobile app, after you start a text post, you will find an image icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the composition screen. Tapping it allows you to select one or more images from your device; these get attached to the post and appear inline. After uploading the image, you can continue adding body text below or above it, giving you a post with both visual and written content visible to readers. On desktop using the Fancy Pants rich-text editor, you can insert images directly into the body of a text post by clicking the image button in the formatting toolbar. This method lets you place images at specific points within the text rather than just at the top. However, the feed preview on desktop may show only a link to the image viewer rather than an inline preview, which differs from how a dedicated image post would display. Alternatively, you can upload an image to an external hosting service like Imgur and paste the direct image URL into the post body; Reddit will render it as an inline image. Adding hyperlinks to external sources in a text post is straightforward in both interfaces. In the Fancy Pants editor, highlight the text you want to turn into a link, then click the link button in the toolbar and paste the URL. In Markdown mode, the format is `anchor text` — for example, `this article` renders as a clickable phrase. Pasting a raw URL without formatting will also create a clickable link, though using anchor text is generally cleaner. Be aware that some communities have rules against certain types of links, including self-promotional links, paywalled articles, or links to competing platforms, so checking community rules before embedding external references is always a good practice.
